I'm Cool therefore I Pownce
Yeah; what he said.
In the WinExtra blog Steven Hodson tackles the new Social Media application called Pownce and though he attempts to see the new & cool side at first blush he comes up cold.
Honestly I don't think there's much I can add except to put a fine point on some issues.
Was I suckered in to see what was new and cool about it? Yes. I'm an easy target. Curious as they come.
- Is it new? Yes.
- Is it Cool? Yes.
Pownce is sleek. It's fairly intuitive. And it's easy to do things like upload links, files, an mp3 of O Canada in Honor of Canada Day eh?
Twitter is more simple however, and encourages succinctness. And I can get it fed to me a gazillion ways.
Pownce is kind of like an exclusive party you need an invitation for; something that I understand but that still makes me a bit uneasy. The same people I see on Facebook and twitter are there and that's OK - but to tell the truth I'm concerned that multiple social networking sites dilute my networking efforts.
I'm sticking around Pownce to see what happens but will remain a dyed in the wool twitterer
What do you think? Will you be Powncing for any genuinely good reason? Or maybe is it flattering just to be asked to the party?

I wonder what would have happened had Pownce been first or Jaiku for that matter. Would Twitter be so successful? Both Pownce and Jaiku have considerable more functionality but, I started with Twitter and have built up a very supportive and amazing collection of techies, podcasters, knitters etc that there is now way I have the time or energy to continually re-add and seek out the people that I want to talk to.
I've always been kinda un-cool my whole life and this is a time when I really don't mind.
Twitter has all I need. I don't begrudge people for trying the others, we each have to determine what works best for ourselves.
I'm sticking with Twitter until there is something that can do the same thing, but better.
Where is that damned Claven now? He owes me a beer.

Okay, now I'm singing the Cheers theme song. (I am sooo susceptible to earworms.) And NewMediaJimBob seems to be the common link here -- he is such a SocialMediaButterfly!
I can see uses for Pownce -- perhaps business applications -- that are not (yet) available on Twitter. But the fact that Twitter goes wherever I go is the key selling point for me.
Well, that and the fact that Twitter is where my peeps hang out. New tools or technology cannot replace a living, breathing network of people I want to keep in touch with.

Ah, all tweet peeps so far. I'm loving Jim's Cheers analogy & maybe that's why I now have started to like facebook too. I can send them a "drink" without having a long involved conversation with them - or expecting anything in return - but being open to it just the same. here's to you, JimBob!
Eugene, Pownce seems to be populated, in my limited experience, by people with more room to interact at length but less inclination to do so. Are twitterers just a more chatty crowd by nature or is in the numbers?
And Ann, I'm so glad we fall into one another. If you ever lose track of me, the always vigilant NMJ-bob probably knows exactly where I am :^) We Washingtonians are prone to put a kind of radar around each other & tune in often when we're not in undisclosed locations :^)

I'm still getting started with pownce (thanks Jim) but I dunno, I kind of appreciate the single-minded focus of twitter. Clive Thompson wrote recently that Twitter was like proprioception... it lets you sense where your social network is at. Quickly and without clutter. pownce feels like it has this extra 'stuff' to filter. But who knows, maybe i'll like it more in a few weeks.
@Jim - Twitter is like Cheers? hmm... there might be something to that.

A plus, you found me on Pownce and I added you to my Twitter list to better keep track of you.
I was puzzling over the connection and then log in here to check out your post and find NMJ...ahhh that's the connection from Pownce.
I like Twitter for ongoing flow of whatever pops into my head sort of comments. I enjoy the photo and music files my Twitter friends are sharing on Pownce. I think the dust is still trying to settle.
So far I still like Twitter best..Powncing is for at home time when I am not trying to get a little work done.
Glad we stumbled across each other.

Suan, I'm with you. Twitter is like the neighborhood bar wherer the waitress is a grouchy and the food isn't terribly good, but everyone knows your name. Call me old fashioned, but I like Twitter even though it drives me crazy sometimes.
